Nijmegen March Maps/RoutesOn every day of the Nijmegen four day march, a different city plays a central role. There is the day of Elst, the day of Wijchen, the day of Groesbeek and to conclude, the day of Cuijk. Every day the routes for the different distances are marked with signs (see an example on the right). The red arrows are for the 50 km route, green are for the 40 km military route (which starts from Camp Heumensoord), white are for the 40 km route for civilians and blue are for the 30 km route. Use the links below to view the maps and route descriptions for each march: Day 1 - The day of Elst The first day goes through the Betuwe. The start is in the centre of Nijmegen and the route goes via the Waalbrug to Lent. Then via the little town Doornik towards Bemmel. Here the 30 km route goes rather straight towards Elst, the first city of the day. The 40 km route for civilians and the 50 km route goes towards Huissen. These routes will also go to Elst, passing through Elden. After Elst the route will take go through the beautiful area of the Betuwe towards Valburg. From here the 50 km route makes an extra round through Herveld. Then all distances go further via Slijk-Ewijk to Oosterhout, from where the dike along the Waal is taken towards Nijmegen. For the second time the Waal is crossed via the Waalbrug and then to the finish on the Wedren for the first day. Day 2 -The day of Wijchen The second day is described by many participants as heavy and dull. It starts with a walk through the city on the way to the beautiful fen of Hatert. Then the route goes via Alverna to Wijchen. From there, the 50 km route goes first to Balgoij and via the dike to Niftrik, before they reach Wijchen for the second and last time. From Wijchen the walkers go through Beuningen, and from there to Weurt. From Weurt again a walk through the city, before they reach the finish of the second day. Day 3 - The day of Groesbeek The third day is famous for the Zevenheuvelenweg ("Road of the seven hills") and is described by many participants as the most beautiful day of the marches. This day also starts with a walk through the city via the cornfield in the direction of Malden. From Malden the route goes to Mook, where the 30 km route crosses the Wolfsberg to Groesbeek. The other distances go via Plasmolen to Milsbeek. Here the 50 km route and the 40 km military route take a round towards Aaldonk, to join to 40 km civilian route again. From this point the real climbing of the march starts. The first hills appear at Grafwegen and Bredeweg. In Groesbeek, the central city of the day, the real Zevenheuvelenweg starts for all distances and goes in the direction of the town Berg en Dal. Day 4 - The day of Cuijk The last day of the four day march is famous for his Via Gladiola. But before you get there you have to walk for one more day. From Nijmegen it goes to St. Walrick. From there the routes go to Overasselt, where the 30 km route already goes to Malden, the 40 km route for civilians prepares for the walk to Beers. The 50 km route and the 40 km military route go via Grave and Gassel to Beers. Right after Beers the 50 km route makes a little round to reach Cuijk, the central city of the fourth day, together with the 40 km military route and the 40 km civilian route. From Cuijk you cross the Maas via the pontoon bridge towards Mook and Malden. In Malden all participants prepare for the final of the four day march, the glorious entry in Nijmegen via St. Annastraat, renamed for this occasion as "Via Gladiola". |
